Design and Development
The OM 50, a remarkable firearm, was the brainchild of James Owens, a retired U.S. Marine Corps officer, and Chris Movigliatti from Switzerland. This masterpiece of engineering was designed to cater to the needs of military and law enforcement personnel for precise anti-material rifle (AMR) shooting. The first prototype of the OM 50 was produced within just three months of the design phase, and it began mass production by Swiss AMSD company in 2003. The name “OM 50” is a testament to the designers, with the number 50 representing the caliber, and “Nemesis” signifying the Greek goddess of revenge, highlighting the weapon’s formidable capabilities.
Modularity and Versatility
One of the standout features of the OM 50 is its modular design. This allows for the interchangeability of different barrel lengths, ranging from 381mm to 838mm, making it suitable for various scenarios, from urban warfare to long-range targeting. The barrel is floating, which ensures accuracy, and it is made from aviation-grade aluminum. The sight is securely mounted on the receiver using a set of cross screws, and the trigger is adjustable with a two-stage fire mechanism.
Three Versions and Performance
The OM 50 comes in three versions: MKI, MKII, and MKIII. The MKI is a single-shot version without a magazine, while the MKII features a magazine holding 5 rounds. The MKIII, the most common version, is essentially an MKII with additional railings for mounting accessories. When using high-precision ammunition, the OM 50 achieves a remarkable accuracy of less than 0.5 MOA at 300 meters and less than 1 MOA at 1000 meters. There are even records of U.S. Marine Corps snipers achieving a remarkable 0.25 MOA accuracy at 1000 yards with the OM 50.
Production and Evolution
As of December 31, 2010, AMSD ceased production of the OM 50 and transferred the rights to Swiss Arms AG. Swiss Arms AG took over and made several improvements to the human-machine interface, renaming it SAN 511. The SAN 511 comes in two versions: SAN 511-1 and SAN 511-2. The SAN 511-2 features additional railings, similar to the OM 50 MKIII.
Comparison with Other AMRs
When comparing the OM 50 with other anti-material rifles, it stands out for its exceptional accuracy, modularity, and versatility. For instance, the AMR-2, a 12.7mm heavy sniper rifle designed and produced by China’s Norinco Group, is another notable AMR. However, the OM 50 offers superior accuracy and a wider range of barrel lengths, making it a more versatile choice.
Conclusion
The OM 50 Nemesis is a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of its designers. Its modular design, exceptional accuracy, and versatility make it an ideal choice for military and law enforcement personnel. Although production of the OM 50 has ceased, its legacy continues with the SAN 511, which carries on the torch of this remarkable firearm.
